CHAPTER ELEVEN
Lotte was supposed to meet Fajah in her office at nine oâclock in the morning. She woke up way earlier than she had to, making sure she was fully refreshed, in the hope of not accidentally saying anything stupid.
She looked through her wardrobe, trying to find something else other than sweaters and sweatpants to wear. In the back there was a pile of dresses she hadnât so much as glanced at in many months. She doubted they would look good on her now, or be comfortable to wear. She spotted a grayish dress, with some sort of ribbon-looking thing as a belt, in the bottom of the pile that was a bit looser and had a velvety soft fabric compared to the others. The dress was pretty, but she understood why her past self had put it in the bottom of the pile. It wasnât as curve-flattering and it wasnât a color bomb like the others; the grayish dress was something Lotte a year earlier would have thought was something a grandma would wear.
In the building where Fajah had her office, there were many people on their way to work. Some people walked across the lobby looking at their phones and some people were in such a hurry that they didnât think about the consequences of rushing around in a crowded place. Lotte felt small, not able to stand up and be the same height as everyone else. She disliked when people were late, but she would pay all the money she had to be able to rush through the corridors without a second thought.
In her current state she felt close to invisible to everyone around her; she felt as if she werenât there. Except for a girl standing over in a corner, popping her chewing gum over and over again, eyes glued to the wheelchair.
Lotte hurried to reach the elevator doors before they closed. âHold the elevator!â she shouted.
Fajahâs office was on the fifth floor, which meant that she would have to use the elevator to be able to get there. But it wasnât easy with people cutting in line and filling up the space until bursting. She waited a couple minutes until the elevator came back. On the second try, she managed to get inside, but from the glance of a man who could have easily chosen the stairs instead, she got the feeling that she took up too much space.
Fajah came and greeted her as soon as she reached her floor. The first thing Lotte noticed were the wide corridors, which made it easier for her to move around. The restroom also had a little wheelchair friendly sign on it, and all rooms were easy to access.
Lotte got a quick tour of the place with instructions on what to do that first day, which was to pack orders and make some calls, before they headed to Fajahâs office.
âThank you so much, this means a lot to me.â
âAw, no worries hun!â Fajah said, sitting down on top of her desk.
